Bangkok Podcast 15: Is Bangkok Safe?
Bangkok is a sprawling, steamy city of roughly 8 million that can give any other metropolis a run for its money. Naturally, crime and violence are a reality of everyday life, although not on the same scale as other notorious places like Rio de Janeiro, New York or Johannesburg. Despite this, one of the most common questions we get is: is Bangkok safe?
The short answer to this question is: yes, Bangkok overall is a very safe city. However, living here does require a certain amount of street smarts and a bit of knowledge about how things in Thailand work if you’re to navigate successfully around the odd pitfall. On this episode, Tony and Greg talk about their experiences trying to avoid crime and violence, give a few sage tips on what to do if something does go awry, and share a few of their personal encounters with the ugly side of living in a huge city.
Tony also vents about Google’s dominance annoyance over online advertising, and Greg talks about his trip on the new Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link (SARL) and ponders whether people will choose to avoid the taxis for the new electric rail system.

Another great one guys! Keep it up!
5 years ago my then fiance (farang) was mugged in our building in her bath towel… My advice? Kind of just like you said. Over the years, Thai people have been lovely, helpful and great… …but some people see us (farangs) as very opportunistic targets…
Luckily my now wife wasn’t harmed and we only lost a few hundred Baht from her purse, but we did spend the next day and a half at the local Thai Police Station once they caught the teenage kid and were needed for questioning and the all-so-Thai photo shoot for the local newspaper…
Don’t like Google’s products? What are you German?
Yes my father was German.
I really like the show, i’m coming to BKK by december thanks for all the tips….i hope we will see video podcast from your guys…cheers
Hey Greg,
I have a theory as to why the kid was trying to attack you. Mistaken identity.
He may have had an altercation with another farang who looked kind of like you. Since Westerners all look the same to most Asians, he saw you and thought you were the person who “wronged” him.
That’s my theory.
Only if the Thai guy had an altercation with Homer Simpson! 😉
Hi there guys, can u plz tell me if there is a train from bangkok airport to nana area??
thankyou
Tommy
No train directly to Nana Station. Take the City train from the airport to Phaya Thai Station, then transfer to the BTS line going to Nana.
For what it’s worth, generally speaking, I feel that Bangkok is a pretty safe place for those wishing to conduct business or take part in tourism. I feel safer in Bangkok, especially late at night, than I do in London.
I have put together some thoughts on what I have both learned, and experienced, over the past 18 years in Bangkok [regarding safety] in this video.
